Soccer Rules

  1. Please arrive at least fifteen (15) minutes prior to game time so that games may begin on time.
  2. Games are forty (40) minutes in length, with no stoppage for a halftime. Games begin at the assigned time, please be ready to play.
  3. Teams are comprised of six (6) players with a minimum of two (2) women. A default will occur if any team cannot field a squad by ten (10) minutes past the official start time.
  4. A team may play with a minimum of three (3) players, as long as one (1) of the players is a female. Captains may agree to waive the rules regarding minimum players; however, this must be decided before the game starts. Captains should be aware that if they agree to allow a team to play with less than the minimum requirement, the game counts.

Standard soccer rules apply to all games :

    • Teams are comprised of six (6) players (including goalie), with a minimum of two (2) female players
    • The game begins with one team initiating play by making a pass from the centre of the field/court
    • Player substitutions may be made at anytime (i.e. changing on the fly is allowed). However, please ensure that the player coming off has completely entered the team bench before the new player joins the action and the change does not disrupt the flow of the game. Goalies cannot change on the fly. Please wait for a stoppage in play before substituting goalies.
    • After a goal is scored, the team that was scored on gets the ball from beside the net. The opposing team may cross centre once the ball has been kicked.
    • A handball infraction occurs when the ball hits a player's arm from the ELBOW down (as opposed to the shoulder). In addition, players may use their arms to block the ball from hitting their groin area, and females may also use their arms to block the ball from hitting their chest. This rule will reduce the number of stoppages in play; however, please don't abuse it.
    • All free kicks are indirect. To score off an indirect kick, the ball must first be touched by another player (offense or defense, but not the goalie)
    • The offending player should call their own infractions, however any players involved with the incident may also make a call. Players not on the court at the time of any incident cannot make a call at any time.
    • Games may end in a tie during the regular season, but not during playoffs.
    • If the ball goes above the mesh in the stands - it is considered out of play and the ball then goes to the team that did not kick it out, at the side.
    • If the ball hits the roof, the ball is out of play, the ball will go to the team that did not kick it to the roof, at the side.
  5. Slide Tackling: Even if contact is made with the ball first, slide tackling is not allowed under any circumstances. As well, no players (with the exception of the goalie) can slide to block a shot or pass at any time.
  6. Rough Play: No rough play is tolerated, and may result in expulsion for the league.
